This is a weekend during which guilds, clusters, and story enthusiasts meet in spirit to share their voices in concerts around the globe. SOS has produced Tellabration! since 1990.

CLUSTER NEWS:  TWO NEW/REACTIVATING GROUPS!!!!

The Columbus Storytelling Cluster is off and running.  Alton Russell reports they had 13 to attend their last meeting.  They  discussed goals for their group, as well as the advantages of becoming an SOS Cluster.  All agreed to get info and news about the storytelling community, develop and tell stories, invite other storytellers from outside Columbus, encourage each other, and to meet and have fun. The next meeting is September 17, at the Columbus Library, Macon Road.  The hope is to outgrow this room and ”move up” to a larger place. Please join “the lucky 13” in Columbus on the 17th.

The Tellers of Two Cities:  A storytelling troupe, formed in 1987, with members from Augusta, GA, and Aiken, SC, as well as nearby towns. They have produced Tellabration! since 1988. This group is a Cluster of SOS, as well as a Guild of the SC Storytelling Network.

EVEN MORE ‘DOIN’S’ BY OUR MEMBERS:

Jan Cribbs will be the storyteller on tap for two concerts at the Westobou Festival in Augusta, Georgia, in September.  The daytime concert on Wednesday, September 23rd, from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. will offer “Stories for the Young at Heart” for ages 6 and up.  The evening concert on Thursday, September 24th, from 7:00 - 8:00 PM is for adults interested in “What Do Women Most Want? - and Other Stories.”  Both concerts will be held at Union Baptist Church, originally constructed in 1851. The church is a jewel-like space with great acoustics, respectfully renovated by Historic Augusta, Inc.  Tickets will be available at the door; please go to the SOS website to see the flyer for more details.

The Blue Ridge Mountains Storytellers will be having a “Storytelling Celebration” on Saturday, October 24, 2009, 7:00 PM at the Blue Ridge Community Theater, 2591 E. First Street in Blue Ridge.  Tickets are only $5.00 and the proceeds go to the Sunny D Children’s Theater.  For more information, contact Sue Canady at 706-374-5156.

4TH ANNUAL HALLOWEEN TOURS AT HISTORIC OAKLAND CEMETERY (OCTOBER 23-25, 2009)

From Wynn Montgomery:  Take advantage of a rare opportunity to experience one of Atlanta’s true treasures after dark and meet a few of Oakland’s “residents,” who will share their stories.  Once again, Historic Oakland Cemetery is hosting “Capture the Spirit of Oakland” tours during the weekend before Halloween.  During these one-hour tours, which are designed to “enlighten, not frighten,” a guide will lead you to six grave sites where a storyteller in period costume will bring to life the occupant of that site.  The storytellers include SOS members Cathy Kaemmerlen and Wynn Montgomery; Wynn also wrote and/or edited the tellers’ scripts.

The tours begin at 5:30 each night (Friday, October 23; Saturday, October 24; and Sunday, October 25).  To ensure all ticket holders are accommodated, tours are sold in timed increments, and a limited number of tickets are available.  Advance tickets are available through the Oakland website (www.oaklandcemetery.com) for $15 (adults) and $5 (children age 12 and under).  This event has sold out in each of the past three years, so buy your tickets early.

Musicians will entertain you while you wait for your tour to begin.  Refreshments will be available for sale, and the Museum Shop will be open.  Your ticket will entitle you to a $5 discount a several nearby restaurants on that weekend.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a flashlight.

He/She and Me at the Academy Theater, featuring Sharon Mathis
When Pat’s longtime soul mate Sam becomes Sheila, Pat tries tap dancing, Buddhism, shopping, and more in her quest to discover what “soul mate” means. This story of a marriage surviving change and loss was inspired by Dr. Virginia Erhardt’s book, “Head Over Heels: Women Who Stay with Cross-Dressers and Transsexuals”.

Written and performed by Sharon Mathis, this one act play premiered at the Academy Theatre in June and will also be seen at the the Southern Comfort conference, the Atlanta Queer Literary Festival, and the New Orelans Fringe Theater Festival.

Sharon is a writer, actor, storyteller, and psychologist in Atlanta. She’s appeared at the Academy Theatre, Ladyfest South, Atlanta Storytelling Festival, national professional conferences, and venues from bars to churches.

Performances are Friday and Saturday nights, Sept. 4 and 5, 11 and 12 at 8pm at the Academy Theatre in Avondale Estates. Tickets are $12 at the door or by reservation at the theatre box office, 404-474-8332. Group rates are available. For more information and directions, please see our website at www.academytheatre.org. Group rates are available.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY IN DEKALB SCHOOL…Last year the Board voted to implement a volunteer program at Knollwood Elementary School, a DeKalb school south of Memorial Drive. Feriel carried out the program intermittently, using storytelling to enhance learning skills. Again this year, the teacher, Sabrina Adler, offers SOS the opportunity of working with her fourth grade class. Her need is for adults to come into the classroom and listen to her students read for an hour. Sometimes one on one, sometimes with several in a group. Sabrina teaches reading each morning, 10:00am - 11:30am.
There is a large body of research supporting the fact that the skill of learning in all subjects is enhanced by reading out loud, being read to, and one-on-one interaction in discussion of reading.
During the second semester, we will be able to work with the kids on storytelling. Sabrina wants to be certain their reading skills are in order before branching out.  So if you are interested in listening to kids read, once a week, once a month, every day, as often or as little as you want.

Have you heard of the Creative Economies initiative? Check out the website:  www.gamadegagrownproducts.org.   Storytelling is such an important aspect of Southern culture and we encourage all storytellers to list their talents on this state website.  You must self register.  Please log on to the website and click on “Register” in the upper right corner.  Click on People, Performers then Storytellers.  There is room to write as much as you like about what you do.  Please add pictures.   Each entry is reviewed by our tourism reps in the field before it appears on the website.
