Workshops

“Storytelling as an Art” - Friday afternoon with Bill Harley
Is storytelling an art? What does it mean when we say you’re an artist? Can we begin to identify what makes a storyteller an artist? Are there ways to evaluate storytelling and storytellers? I think there are. Through reading and discussion, performance and video, we’ll lay out a framework for a discussion about recognizing what makes something an “art” and how we can begin to discuss storytelling as an art. This class will provide a place for educators and performing artists, folklorists and revivalists to consider where storytelling fits in the world of art.

“From Page to Voice and Back Again” - Saturday morning with Bill Harley
How are the written word and the spoken word different from each other? What happens when a story on the page is told out loud - or - when an oral story is written down? Bill, an author and storyteller, caught between the worlds of orality and literacy, offers some of his insights and experiences.

“Beginning Storytelling” - Saturday Morning with Connie Prunch Dodge
Join Connie Prunch Dodge for a Beginning Storytelling Workshop to explore where to find stories, how to learn a story, and how to develop characters and place in story. Learn how to build a network of story buddies to help you work on and rehearse your stories.

“Youth Storytelling Workshop” - Saturday at 1:00 pm with LaDoris Bias-Davis and Curtis Richardson
Grades K-3 will join Ms. LaDoris Bias Davis and Grades 4 and up will work with Mr. Curtis Richardson to learn storytelling skills and have lots of fun. At the end of the workshop, participants will get to share stories with an audience as a part of the SOS Festival! Click here to view the flyer.
